My Daily Thrifty Tip for January 2, 2011

#34 Bring a calculator to determine Cost Per Ounce. It can sometimes be hard to tell if it's a better deal to buy the larger package. Many stores will calculate the cost per ounce for you. You will see this on the price sticker on the shelf. This makes it easy to compare brands and different size packages. If your store doesn't do this calculation for you, simply bring in your calculator to determine which is the better deal.

For instance if a box of cereal is $2.50 and contains 20 ounces, divide 2.5 by 20. You will find that the cost per ounce is 12.5 cents. Don't forget to include your coupon in your calculation! If you have a 50 cent coupon, subtract that from the purchase price making it $2 for 20 ounces. This brings your cost per ounce down to 10 cents per ounce. This makes it easier for you to see what is the better deal for your family!
