October is SIDS Awareness month.  HALO® and I would like to inform my readers about safe sleep practices for baby.  I have three kids and with my first I wasn't exactly promoting the safest sleep.  Of course I put her to sleep on her back but my baby was surrounded by a blanket and bumpers that could have suffocated her.  Thankfully all turned out well and she is a happy and healthy 9 year old.  With Sam and Ava I knew more about safe sleep practices and DID NOT put bumpers in their crib or cradle.  I also practice swaddling and loved the products from HALO®.  Sam and Ava each had a HALO® SleepSack® and SleepSack® Swaddles.  This ensures that baby is warm, but the wearable blanket can't cover up baby's face.  Ava was born last November and she wore her SleepSack® every night.  Now we have the HALO® SleepSack® Early Walker and she and I love it.  She stays all snuggly warm and there are no loose blankets in her crib that could accidentally cause suffocation.  I love how her feet are still out so that she can walk around while I am getting the other two ready for bed.  She loves the colorful owl on the front of her HALO® SleepSack® Early Walker and so do I!

ALWAYS

• Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at night time.
• Use a crib that meets current safety standards with a firm mattress that fits snuggly and is covered with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.
• Remove all soft bedding and toys from your baby’s sleep area (this includes loose blankets, bumpers, pillows and positioners). The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests using a wearable blanket instead of loose blankets to keep your baby warm.
• Offer a pacifier when putting baby to sleep. If breastfeeding, introduce pacifier after one month or after breastfeeding has been established.
• Breastfeed, if possible, but when finished, put your baby back to sleep in his or her separate safe sleep area alongside your bed.

NEVER

• Never put your baby to sleep on any soft surface
• Never dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or take your baby into a room or car where someone has recently smoked.
