Gerald McRaney’s Most Memorable Roles
Debuting on DVD August 20
Gerald McRaney has played many lovable characters in his long career. His friendly face has become a favorite of many households over the years. In Heart of the Country, he once again plays a father figure who is sure to capture the hearts of the audience. Here, we outline some of our favorite characters that McRaney has played over the years.
Based on the novel by Rene Gutteridge and John Ward, Heart of the Country is a love story starring country music singer Jana Kramer (“One Tree Hill”), Randy Wayne (“True Blood”), and Gerald McRaney (“Major Dad”). Faith (Kramer) and Luke (Wayne) have it all. Faith is a beautiful singer and Luke is an up-and- coming businessman. When their life together is shattered and she is forced to return home to the family she turned her back on years ago she must find the strength to love again. Watch Jana Kramer in her first leading movie role in the year's most inspirational and romantic movie event when it debuts on DVD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on August 20.

Major Dad

From 1989 until 1993, McRaney played the leading role of Major John D. McGillis in the television series Major Dad.  The show won the “Best New Television Series” in 1990 from the Young Artists Awards. His lovable character brought families together across the country as they sat down to watch one of their favorite father figures and laugh over his experiences.

Designing Women

Although he only appeared in two episodes, Dash Goff was a fan-favorite from the TV show Designing Women. Gerald McRaney played Dash, the ex-husband of Suzanne. McRaney played this endearing writer and captured the hearts of the audience as well as Suzanne. Of her six ex-husbands, Dash was her true love.

Touched by an Angel

In the long-lived television series Touched by an Angel, McRaney played the role of Russell Greene. McRaney made 7 appearances between the years 1996 and 1999.
His character was so popular that a spin-off series was created based around an older version of Russell.

Promised Land

To continue the story of the beloved character Russell Greene, a series entitled Promised Land was created. McRaney once again played a lovable father figure as he took his family on a cross-country road trip. By the end of the three-year series, fans had become ever more attached to Russell Greene.

Southland

When McRaney first appeared in the hit television series Southland this year, the audience was thrilled. As a guest star, he played the role of Hicks, a retired police officer. Hicks lives on a boat in Marina del Rey. Although his character may drink too much and appear to be a bum, he is a favorite of the audience and an example to Officer Cooper.
