I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for BGCA. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.

My daughter will be turning ten years old this summer.  My husband and I really worry about the approaching teen years and how to keep her safe.  In this day and age things are so much more different from when we were growing up.  Now as a parent we have to worry about cyberbullying, online privacy, and data sharing especially on social networks.  For instance, the other day my daughter was playing an online game on the computer.  I didn't realize that it was a game that other kids could chat with her.  A while later she came into my room in tears that some other girls on the game were calling her screen name stupid and saying that he character was ugly.  I felt terrible for her and now I am much more careful about the games that she can play.  That was just my first taste of cyberbullying and really brought my attention to the importance of Internet safety for my kids.

Recently I was introduced to a site that can help prepare us parents for the tough road ahead with Internet Safety.  The Boys & Girls Club of America and Sprint have teamed up to offer us some great advice on how to keep our kids from being bullied and tips for keeping them safer in this social media age.  Although I haven't allowed my 10 year old to open a Facebook page and the fact that Facebook doesn't allow kids under the age of 13 to create a Facebook page, over 5 million Facebook accounts are of children under the age of 10!  My daughter has asked to create a Facebook page because some of her friends have them, but I have refused.  I just think she is too young and I don't think it's appropriate right now.  Many of her friends also have cell phones.  I don't think that's necessary yet either.  I will allow her to have a cell phone when I am not with her at extracurricular activities in the future.  However I think the age of 10 is still a little young.

I took the "Are you a Cyber Smart Parent" Quiz on the Cyber Safe page and my eyes were opened to many things that I need to consider speaking to my daughter about before allowing her to use social media.  One of the main things I worry about is cyberbullying.  Although I can't protect her from everything and everyone, I want to make sure she knows that her father and I are always here for her to come to when she has a problem.  Kids can be mean!  I also want to make sure she  knows that cyberbullying is wrong and let her know that it is NOT okay to do that to another person.

I learned some scary facts while exploring the BGCA CyberSafe Site.  Did you know that 1 in 30 teens is cyberbullied on social media sites?  Another scary fact is that the average teen sends and receives an average of more than 1,000 texts per month.  With that large amount of texting, you better believe some bullying is going on.  1 out of 4 teens are bullied or harassed by text message!  It's important that we as parents talk to our teens about this and let them know that they aren't alone and that bullying IS NOT okay.  You will find a wealth of information on the BGCA CyberSafe Site.  I urge you to check it out so that your are armed with all of the facts before you talk to your teen.

Eye Health: Protecting Your Eyes from Damaging UV Rays This Summer

I wrote this review while participating in an Influencer campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and received a promotional item from Mom Central to thank me for participating.

My family and I all need some type of vision correction.  My husband, my daughter Bella and my son Sam all wear glasses and I wear contacts.  Ava is still pretty little and we haven't seen anything wrong with her eyes yet.  Eye health is something I think about regularly.  After all, our vision is so important to all of us!  Well this summer we all need to think about protection from the sun.  Everyone always thinks about protecting their skin from the damaging UV rays from the sun, but what about your eyes?  

This summer we are planning tons of outdoor activities.  I will be armed with sunscreen, sun hats and umbrellas to keep my kids protected from the sun.  I guess one important thing that I have overlooked is  their eyes.  Bella and Sam wear glasses and it is hard for them to see without them.  I never realized the importance of a good pair of sunglasses until I read this article from Acuvue about the sun and your eyes.

I learned a lot from this article.  For example did you know that when the days get longer from Spring through Fall, the incidence of eye exposure to UV rays is actually greatest earlier and later in the day - not in the middle of the day like you might have thought.  

I also learned that while direct sunlight can be extremely harmful to the eyes, reflected UV rays (i.e., from water, grass, sand) can be even more harmful! With all of this harm that can come to our eyes this summer, we need to find good eye protection for ourselves and our family members. This protection can be found in the right type of sunglasses and can start with UV blocking contact lenses. I wear contacts and was thrilled to learn that my Acuvue contacts are Class 1 UV blockers and offer the most protection for my eyes.

UV blocking contact lenses can provide an important level of additional protection from UV exposure. Not all contact lenses offer UV protection, and, of those that do, not all provide similar absorption levels. ACUVUE® is the only major brand of contact lenses which blocks approximately 97%of UV-B and 81% of UV-A rays as standard across the entire range of its products.  Although UV-blocking contact lenses are beneficial in helping to protect against harmful UV rays entering into the eye, long-term clinical studies have not been done to show that they directly reduce the risk of any specific eye disease or condition.  I am glad to know that my eyes are getting this great protection from the sun.  I wear UV blocking ACUVUE contacts and also wear sunglasses when I go outside!

The best sunglasses should say that they block 99% of UV rays and should have lenses large enough to completely cover the eye and prevent as much light as possible from entering through the edges of the glasses.  Wrap around sunglasses are best.  Our children are at greater risk of eye damage than we are, so it is very important to protect their eyes this summer by arming them with big brimmed hats and sunglasses!  Children have larger pupils which allows more light into their eyes. 

I really want to urge my readers to read this article, so that you are prepared this summer with the correct eye protection for yourself and your family.

Revolution Foods Natural Meal Kits Review

The convenience of these meals is awesome!  I can just pull out a box and lunch is ready to go!  Sometimes when we have baseball, gymnastics or scouts, I will pull out a Revolution Foods meal kit for my kids and dinner is served!  They are fueled for their activity and I don't have to rush at getting a meal together to get to practice in time!  The best part is that I know that what they are eating is a healthy option!

Each meal kit comes complete with a serving of fruit, and at least 7 grams of whole grains.  The meats are from humanely raised animals that are not treated with antibiotics, nitrites or nitrates.  The cheese is made from milk that is not treated with rBST growth hormone.  That all sounds great to this mommy!  My kids don't care about any of that though.  They just worry about the taste.  All three agree that the Revolution Foods meal kits are delicious!
